David Holtz entered the 17th Regiment Infantry on July 6, 1812, as a captain under Colonel Samuel Wells. This regiment was organized on January 11, 1812, in Kentucky and was later consolidated with the 3rd Infantry. Their purpose was to liberate the Northwest Territories (Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois) from the British. The 17th Infantry participated in the siege at Fort Meigs and the Niagara campaign.
